Sulphates are used as a foaming agent in shampoos, facial cleansers, bath products, and household cleaners. It is not biodegradable and can be toxic to our water systems. BFM products are sulphates free.
Studies have determined most sulphates to be cancer-causing. Sodium laureth sulphate can be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane which harm the nervous system and interfere with human development.
Sulphates are detrimental when used on the hair as it strips natural oils from the scalp and hair. Due to this, it can make hair dry and brittle. Also, if you have a sensitive scalp, sulphates can cause irritation leading to a red, dry, itchy scalp.
Parabens are a widely used preservative that is easily ingested by our skin, the body’s largest organ.
It operates as an antifungal agent that can mimic estrogen and has been detected in human breast cancer tissues. It is estimated that women are exposed to 50mg of parabens per day. (Prefixes include methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, isobutyl)
Although parabens are main ingredients in many cosmetic products, they are very harmful to the body. Research has shown that due to the mimic of estrogen, it reduces the production of this crucial hormone in women. Not only does this increase the risk of breast cancer, but it also can cause girls to hit puberty earlier than they should.
Parabens also put men at risk when used as it can lead to a low sperm count and even a higher risk of testicular cancer. Since parabens are easily absorbed through the skin, having them in hair products is detrimental to the scalp. Studies show that parabens can be found in both the urine and blood of healthy individuals who have used paraben-based products.
Fragrance is a catchall term that represents greater than 3000 chemicals used to manufacture this synthetic ingredient. Very few of these three thousand ingredients have been tested for toxicity and are therefore entirely unregulated.
They are used in nearly every type of personal-care product. These chemicals are irritants that can trigger allergies, migraines, asthma symptoms and have been associated with cancer and neurotoxicity.
This catchall term often includes phthalates which is an endocrine disruptor, leading to reproductive harm.
BFM bars scent come from a combination of essential oils and from the natural scent of the ingredients used in which bar.
Shampoo: Apply bar directly to wet hair and massage with hands until desired lather is achieved. Alternatively, lather bar in hands and apply to hair. Rinse thoroughly and repeat as necessary.
Conditioner: Glide the bar directly onto wet hair, starting after the roots and concentrating on the ends. Wait one to three minutes, then rinse fully. Leave the bar out to air dry so that it’s ready for its next use.
